EE4010 - Analog Signals and Filters

Credit points:03
Year:2022
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Prerequisites:EE2201 OR ADMITTANCE INTO MASTERS OF ENGINEERING (PROF)
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering (pre 2023 PCS)

Subject Description

Wave propagation. Transmission lines: characteristic and input impedance, lossless, lossy and distortionless lines. Smith Chart, impedance matching. Introduction to filter networks, practical frequency responses, terminations, frequency and impedance scaling and transformation of low-pass types to high-pass, band-pass or band-stop types. Butterworth, Chebyshev, Cauer-Chebyshev and Bessel filter types. Passive and active filters including ladder structures, cascaded biquad sections, active ladder simulation and switched capacitor filters. RF filters: coupled resonator LC, helical, cavity, dielectric and ceramic filters. Phase locked loops and their applications. Frequency synthesis.

Learning Outcomes

  • analyse and design active filters and switched capacitor filters
  • analyse and design phase locked loops
  • analyse and design practical low pass filters incorporating frequency and impedance scaling and using transformation to other filter types
  • explain the principles of wave propagation and operation of transmission lines. Learn matching and analysis techniques
  • explain types and basic properties of RF filters
  • explain analog signal transmission

Subject Assessment
