Subject Description

    This subject provides an introduction to the basic procedures associated with clinical dental practice. The basic techniques used in dentistry are introduced, with an emphasis on minimally invasive dentistry and preventive care. The morphology and development of the dentitions are explored, along with introductions to dental and soft-tissue charting, and the identification of dental caries and periodontal disease. Students are introduced to dental materials, along with their chemical and physical properties, and the factors that influence the choice of a particular material. The gastrointestinal tract will be explored, along with the impact of nutrition on oral health and disease, and the role of the dentist in nutritional counselling relating to oral health.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss tooth development and morphology, for both the deciduous and permanent dentition, along with eruption timing and sequences
  • Explain the chemistry and properties of dental materials, and the factors that influence the selection of materials for basic dental procedures
  • Explain the caries process, together with the strategies for providing preventive care, including patient nutritional counselling
  • Develop competency in occlusal fissure sealing, preparing cavities and restoring permanent teeth in the simulated environment
  • Discuss the structure and function of the gastrointestinal tract, and the role of nutrition in relation to oral health and disease
  • Demonstrate sound teamwork, ethics, confidentiality and communication principles in relation to other members of the dental team and the dental patient
