Subject Description

    This subject introduces Ethical hacking and penetration testing techniques to the students. They will be learning tools used by Ethical Hackers to examine the security of a device or network. Students will learn to systematically investigate a computer network for possible vulnerabilities and gain an understanding of the countermeasures that a company can take to minimise the effect of vulnerabilities.

Learning Outcomes

  • identify and analyse the stages an ethical hacker requires to take in order to compromise a target system
  • identify tools and techniques to carry out a penetration testing
  • evaluate security techniques used to protect system and user data
  • install, configure, use and manage hacking software on a closed network environment

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Case study analysis - (30%) - Individual
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Scenario-based learning activity - (30%) - Group
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration - (40%) - Individual
