BZ5740 - Wildlife Ecology and Management

Subject Description

This subject presents the theory and practice of the management of terrestrial vertebrates, with a strong emphasis on wildlife management in Australia. What impacts terrestrial biodiversity?, how does ecology factor in?, and how should we manage areas? Topics covered include: sustainable harvesting, fire, grazing, invasive species, managing protected areas, living with wildlife, and disease. Detailed case studies of Australian examples are used, particularly from tropical north Queensland. A 4-day fieldtrip to Wambiana cattle station draws on the principles learnt. Assumed Knowledge:  Students enrolling in this subject should have an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or have acquired equivalent knowledge through other study. They should have a good understanding of principles of population and community ecology (BS5460 or equivalent).
