BM1041 - Anatomy and Physiology for Physiotherapy 1

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Physiotherapy IHCAP Program of the Bachelor of Physiotherapy Honours Program only.

Subject Description

This subject will introduce the principles of human body structure and function as relevant for students of physiotherapy. This includes an introduction to cells and tissues, the nervous system and the function and relationships of bone, muscle, and joints. A detailed study of the gross anatomical structure and functional anatomy of the skull, neck, vertebral column, and upper limb will then be undertaken. An integrated understanding of the human body will be achieved with practical sessions, including the study of human cadaveric material, and functional and clinical case-studies to facilitate the integration of material and the correlation of structure to function.

Learning Outcomes

• to discuss in detail the relationship between the organisational levels of the human body from the cellular to the organ level
• to describe in detail the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems
• to identify and describe in detail the musculoskeletal related structures and functions of the head, neck, back and upper limb
• to critically apply anatomical and physiological knowledge to physiotherapy practice

Subject Assessment

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
• Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (35%) - Individual
• Oral > Presentation 1 - (15%) - Group

Special Assessment Requirements

Achieve an overall percentage of 50% or more and achieve 50% or more on each assessment item. Attend and sign in to at least 80% of the practical's/workshops;
