BM1031 - Anatomy and Physiology for Occupational Therapy 1

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy. Mixed attendance availabilities only available to Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (External) [70510E] students.

Subject Description

This subject will introduce the principles of human body structure and function as relevant for students of occupational therapy. This includes an introduction to cells and tissues, the nervous system and the function and relationships of bone, muscle, and joints. A detailed study of the gross anatomical structure and functional anatomy of the skull, neck, vertebral column, and upper limb will then be undertaken. An integrated understanding of the human body will be achieved with practical sessions, including the study of human cadaveric material, and functional and clinical case-studies to facilitate the integration of material and the correlation of structure to function.

Learning Outcomes

• To discuss the relationship between the organisational levels of the human body from the cellular to the organ level
• To identify and describe the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems
• To identify and describe the structure of the neck, vertebral column and upper limbs
• To critically apply anatomical and physiological knowledge to a human bioscience discipline

Subject Assessment

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
• Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (35%) - Individual
• Oral > Presentation 1 - (15%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Achieve an overall percentage of 50% or more (an aggregate of the on-course assessment tasks and the final examinations); Attend and sign in to at least 80% of the practical's/workshops; Students submit and demonstrate a reasonable attempt on ALL assessment tasks
