Subject Description

    This subject introduces the discipline of pharmacology and relates functioning of the gastrointestinal and nervous systems to drug pharmacokinetics. It also introduces basic concepts of microbiology and the diversity of microorganisms found in the natural environment. It then introduces the immune system and inflammation and how the body interacts with the microorganisms around it. Issues of immune deficiency are also addressed. It then introduces healthcare related microbiology and some of the major pathogens which invade the body to cause disease and illness.

Learning Outcomes

  • describe the components of the immune system and explain their roles in resistance to disease
  • define the major groups of microorganisms, compare modes of transmission and identify treatment and prevention strategies
  • explain introductory principles of pharmacology and the roles of the gastrointestinal and nervous systems in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
  • describe the functional anatomy and physiological processes of the gastrointestinal system and the role of this system in the absorption, metabolism and excretion of drugs
  • describe the functional anatomy and physiological processes of the central and peripheral nervous system and the principles of pharmacological interventions targeting this system

Subject Assessment

Special Assessment Requirements

Obtain an overall cumulative mark of 50%. Attend 80% of practical classes (internal offerings) or attend residential week (mixed mode) to pass the subject. Must achieve a mark of at least 50% on the final exam
