Subject Description

    This subject is the second of two subjects (the other being BC4002) that in combination constitute the full year Honours subject in the Discipline of Molecular and Cell Biology. The subject is a combination of a major research project and assignments.

Learning Outcomes

  • review the scientific literature on a particular topic and design a research program to answer questions raised on that topic
  • conduct a research project in accordance with professional, ethical and safety standards
  • design and implement a research project and statistically analyse the results
  • analyse the results obtained in the context of the contemporary scientific literature
  • prepare a dissertation on the original research topic in appropriate scientific language
  • design and present a written post graduate degree research project proposal
  • communicate orally a research project to a scientific audience

Subject Assessment

As this subject is part of a subject chain, a final standard grade (e.g. P, C) will only be recorded for each subject after successful completion of all parts of the subject chain.

  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (20%) - Individual
  • Written > Thesis/dissertation - (45%) - Individual
  • Poster, Proposal, Lit review - (20%) - Individual
  • Participation > Research/Project participation - (15%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

In order to pass BC4002 and BC4003, you must submit all assessment tasks and at least 50% must be obtained for the thesis, as well as at least 50% for the aggregate of all other assessments

Assumed Knowledge:  6 credit points of level 3 BC subjects at Credit level or higher

Inadmissible Subject Combinations:  BC4001 AND GG4011 AND GG4012
