Subject Description

    This subject explores and critically analyses the links between social policy and human service practice. Contemporary social policy is both a field of study that examines the causes and understandings of social problems and social need, and a set of practices aimed at enhancing citizen well-being. Both concepts are examined in this subject through the critical analysis of relevant social policy issues, policy analysis frameworks and case studies.

Learning Outcomes

  • recognise and articulate the values and world views inherent in different understandings of the causes and subsequent policy responses to social issues
  • critically analyse social policy development, implementation and evaluation processes in the context of human service practice
  • demonstrate the capacity to engage in and critically reflect on the social policy making process
  • synthesise knowledge of key concepts, values, principles, competing models and choices as relevant to a critical analysis of social need and social policy
  • recognise and critically analyse the role and contribution of all stakeholders in the social policy development process
