Subject Description

    This subject provides an overview and insight into animal welfare in livestock industry in the global market. It covers the challenges in the Australian livestock production context, regulation and policy and the need for monitoring and assessment of animal welfare for integrity in the global trading context and in response to consumer demands.

Learning Outcomes

  • describe the importance of animal welfare to the continuity and sustainability of the Australian and international Livestock Industries
  • appraise appropriate animal welfare assessment methodologies as they apply to monitoring and analysing trends in animal welfare
  • describe pertinent contemporary and historical issues that apply to different livestock production systems
  • identify key issues in animal welfare as applied to the control of feral and pest animal management
