TV5120 - Advanced Microbiology and Immunology

Available to graduate students with a degree in Veterinary Science. Other appropriately trained graduates may enrol at the discretion of the Academic Head of Veterinary Science. Periodic attendance on campus required throughout Study Period.

Subject Description

This is a student-orientated course that seeks to build on undergraduate knowledge in the fields of veterinary microbiology and immunology. It is structured around six sessions that deal with: - Host-parasite interactions at a cellular and molecular level; - Tests used to detect infectious agents and the immune response to these agents; - Application of tests in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases.

Learning Outcomes

• map test results with other epidemiological features of a disease in order to predict infectious or parasitic agent spread and origin
• predict the clinical signs and pathology of a disease using knowledge of the pathogenesis of the disease
• select the most appropriate diagnostic test using knowledge of the immune response
• select the most appropriate procedures for sample collection and handling to ensure optimal laboratory results

• Written > Journal article - (30%) - Individual
• Written > Literature review - (50%) - Individual
• Written > Lab/Practical report - (20%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Have a final grade that consists of all summative assessment pieces that is equal to or greater than 50 %.
