TV5110 - General Pathology

Available to graduate students with a degree in Veterinary Science (other appropriately trained graduates may enrol at the discretion of the Director of the Australian Institute of Tropical Veterinary and Animal Science).

Subject Description

This subject will address the mechanisms of disease processes. Thus, the general principles of pathobiology are covered with particular reference to the changes at the levels of cells, tissues and organs.

Learning Outcomes

• describe and compare the difference between cell degeneration and death at the cellular level and the mechanisms by which cells adapt to an altered extracellular environment
• compare and contrast cellular changes and responses to a range of pathological conditions such as necrosis, inflammation, repair, haemostasis, genetic disorders and neoplasia
• explain in general terms the procedures routinely used in diagnostic pathology
• critically evaluate the quality of pathological specimens
• apply knowledge gained in this subject to solve simple veterinary science case studies
