Subject Description

    This subject aims to prepare students to effectively contribute to the management of population health needs resulting from a disaster in both national and international settings. This will be achieved by developing a thorough understanding of disaster prevention, preparation, response and recovery systems.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the principles and phases of disaster management to a variety of scenarios in both developed and developing countries, focussing on the tropics
  • Critically assess the risks and needs of disaster-stricken communities, and the implications for disaster management
  • Differentiate the role of governments, NGOs, the military, international agencies and other stakeholders in disaster management
  • Appraise/articulate the ethical, cultural and legal aspects of disaster health care
  • Critically reflect on the role of public health in the disaster management team

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (25%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (25%) - Group
  • Written > Briefing paper - (50%) - Individual
