SP5202 - Clinical Exercise Physiology Management of Chronic Musculoskeletal Conditions

Credit points:03
Year:2021
Student Contribution Band:Band 4
Administered by:College of Healthcare Sciences

Subject Description

This subject addresses the pathophysiological basis of chronic musculoskeletal injury, pain, and functional impairment in ageing. This subject comprises a combination of online learning and compulsory on-campus (residential) activities. In this subject students will attain advanced knowledge and skills in facilitating and interpreting functional assessments and clinical exercise interventions for chronic musculoskeletal injury, pain, and functional impairment in ageing. Students will also explore environmental and clinical factors influencing safety when facilitating assessment and exercise interventions, including the identification and management of exercise contraindications and adverse signs and symptoms, as well as risk factor stratification and the effects of medications on exercise. This subject also covers practices involved in return to work, including legislative and policy requirements within workers compensation, work-related assessment, and return to work.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate advanced knowledge of the pathophysiological basis, identification and diagnosis, treatment, and functional limitations and safety considerations associated with chronic musculoskeletal injury, pain, and functional impairment in ageing
  • demonstrate knowledge in return to work and occupational rehabilitation environments, with the ability to design, facilitate, and interpret work related assessments undertaken by the clinical exercise physiologist
  • design, facilitate, and interpret assessment of function and movement, with the ability to recognise contraindications and/or risk to exercise, and respond correctly to adverse reactions to exercise
  • create and facilitate clinical exercise interventions for clients experiencing chronic musculoskeletal injury, pain, and functional impairment in ageing

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (35%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Participation > Class participation - Individual
  • Written > Problem task - (20%) - Individual
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Scenario-based learning activity - (35%) - Individual
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) - Individual
