SP5200 - Professional Communication and Practice for Clinical Exercise Physiologists

Subject Description

This subject addresses the fundamental principles of healthcare practice and communication, relevant to the clinical exercise physiologist. The roles and responsibilities of the clinical exercise physiologist in an inter-professional environment will be explored, along with the contemporary challenges of the Australian healthcare sector. This subject will focus on reflective practice, clinical note taking, professional communication, and scope of practice, as well as ethical, cultural, and legal responsibilities, as they apply to the clinical exercise physiology profession. This subject will also explore the principles and application of behavior change, and will provide opportunities for the development of skills in critiquing the literature to inform evidence-based practice.

Learning Outcomes

• describe contemporary healthcare environments, with a focus on clinical exercise physiology and the principles of effective communication in inter-professional, peer to peer, and practitioner to client interactions
• apply principles of professional practice and behaviour including reflection, information management, and appropriate behaviour within professional, ethical, and legal frameworks of clinical exercise physiology
• demonstrate advanced communication strategies within clinical exercise physiology and other allied health settings that are culturally sensitive and can be applied across a range of complex social, personal, economic, and environmental contexts
• critically appraise and articulate evidence-based practice in clinical exercise physiology and healthcare environments
