SP1001 - Science and Practice of Sport and Exercise

Subject Description

    This subject provides an introduction to the various subdisciplines of sport and exercise science including motor behaviour, biomechanics, exercise physiology and sport psychology. The subject will also cover the importance of physical activity, historical and social aspects of physical activity, professional issues in sport and exercise science and an introduction to exercise programming and energy systems.

Learning Outcomes

  • explain the nature and scope of sport and exercise professions
  • describe the structural, physiological and motor development changes across the lifespan and the effects of exercise on these changes
  • describe the physical, physiological and psychological benefits of sport and exercise in terms of general health across the lifespan
  • describe the basic principles of health and physical assessments, sport and exercise testing and programming

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; participate in at least 80% of scheduled practical classes.
