SL3013 - Topics in Focus in Speech Pathology 2

Subject Description

This subject provides students with the opportunity to explore a range of client presentations and conditions including disorders of fluency, cognition and neural processing, and associated speech pathology evaluation and management approaches. This subject builds on and extends students' skills, knowledge, and understanding across diverse practice areas. Students will explore the contribution of clients' experience and behaviour on effective speech pathology practice. Students will develop knowledge and skills for clinical practice in regional, rural, remote and tropical settings with a particular focus on working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Learning Outcomes

• Synthesise information from a variety of clinical sources in order to formulate communication profiles, clinical diagnoses, and intervention plans for conditions including stuttering, and difficulties with neural processing and cognition
• Describe, analyse, and explain how of clients' experiences and behaviour influences effective speech pathology practice
• Formulate and justify speech pathology management for clients with complex needs, and diverse personal circumstances; applying understanding of professional issues such as ethics of care and implications of organisational structures
• Develop and undertake collaborative preventative, educational, and/or promotional projects or programs on speech pathology

• Group presentation 10%; Individual written education resource 10% - (20%) - Group & Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) - (60%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; pass every assessment item; participate in at least 80% of scheduled classes.
