Subject Description

    This subject prepares students for practice in working with clients presenting with acquired language disorders. This subjects builds on prior learning in areas of neurology, linguistics, and clinical processes to support development of clinical reasoning associated with assessment, description and diagnosis, and intervention planning when working with clients with acquired language disorders and cognitive impairments arising secondary to a variety of aetiologies. The subject will also include evaluation of acquired language disorders and aligned speech pathology practices in the context of providing culturally and linguistically responsive services with particular reference to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families, and communities.

Learning Outcomes

  • plan and justify holistic speech pathology assessment practices for clients presenting with acquired language disorders
  • analyse, synthesise, and interpret speech pathology assessment data relating to acquired language disorders
  • critically evaluate speech pathology intervention practices for clients presenting with acquired language disorders with reference to appropriate scientific evidence and client-centred frameworks
  • plan and justify holistic speech pathology intervention practices for clients presenting with acquired language disorders
  • apply knowledge of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families, and communities within the context of speech pathology management of acquired language disorders

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; pass every assessment item; participate in at least 80% of scheduled classes.
