SL2011 - Speech Pathology Clinical Processes A

Subject Description

    This subject introduces students to speech pathology processes and competencies through class and experiential clinical activities. In this subject, knowledge, skills and professional attributes as outlined in CBOS 2011 will be discussed, with an emphasis on client centred and evidence-based approaches. Students will be introduced to their professional role in relation to working with people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, with hearing impairment and/or complex communication needs. Students will apply basic principles required for speech pathology assessment and intervention including integration of prior learning (such as acoustics, phonetics, linguistics, anatomy). Students will undertake observations and clinical placements with supervision and guidance from clinical educators.

  • apply, with support, the CBOS 2011 (Competency Based Occupational Standards 2011, Speech Pathology Australia) and the Speech Pathology Australia Code of Ethics (2010) to one's own professional development and clinical practice
  • apply the four pillars of evidence-based practice to speech pathology services for diverse populations
  • explain the hearing process and disorders of hearing
  • competently perform hearing screening and intervention planning
  • demonstrate foundational clinical skills in planning and conducting assessment
  • reflect on one's own clinical competence with reference to the behavioural descriptors and exemplars in COMPASS (Generic Professional Competencies 1-4 and CBOS 2011 Units 1-4)

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (40%) - Individual

  • Written > Client report 1 - (30%) - Individual
  • Must pass hurdle requirement: placement participation; written clinic notes, feedback and learning reflection - Individual
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) - (30%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; pass every assessment item; must pass the Audiology (part A) and speech pathology (part B) components of the exam; participate in at least 80% of scheduled classes and all clinic activities.
