PY2103 - Introduction to Research Methods and Data Analysis

Subject Description

The purpose of this subject is to introduce students to research methods and data analysis techniques within psychology. Students will first learn about the scientific method and research approaches used by psychology researchers. They will then learn how to design research projects, focussing on how to generate research ideas, formulate testable hypotheses, develop ethical research protocols, and appropriately recruit samples of participants. Students will also learn how validity and reliability issues can harm research and the steps they can take to avoid these problems. Additionally, students will learn how to analyse research data, using basic descriptive and inferential statistics, in the statistical package SPSS. The emphasis will be on understanding statistics at a conceptual level and knowing how to apply them appropriately, rather than on their mathematical calculations. Finally, students will be shown how to present research findings appropriately.

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (30%) - Individual

• Written > Research report - (40%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit at least 80% assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties.

Assumed Knowledge:  To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level
