PS2002 - Physiotherapy 1

Enrolment in this subject is restricted to all students enrolled in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Physiotherapy IHCAP and the Bachelor of Physiotherapy Honours Programs.

Subject Description

The subject provides physiotherapy students with an introduction to acute care issues as they relate to physiotherapy practice. Students apply their knowledge of body systems, particularly the cardiopulmonary system, gained in BM1041:03 Anatomy and Physiology for Physiotherapy 1 and BM1042:03 Anatomy and Physiology for Physiotherapy 2, to the analysis of clinical cases commonly seen across the lifespan in the acute health care setting. Students acquire assessment and intervention skills and further develop clinical reasoning abilities.

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate proficient and safe professional performance of selected physiotherapy techniques for individuals in an acute care setting
• assess the impact of acute and chronic illness on functional capacity and describe the implications for adult and paediatric acute care/cardiorespiratory physiotherapy using sound clinical reasoning skills
• relate the structure and function of body systems to key illnesses and diseases seen in the acute care setting to establish assessment findings and justify appropriate clinical interactions for patients across the lifespan

Subject Assessment

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
• Oral > Viva - (20%) - Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Portfolio - Individual
• Role play 7.5%; written case study analysis 2.5% - (10%) - Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration - (20%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% inclusive of any penalties applied; achieve at least 50% for the practical, viva and written exams; attend at least 80% of scheduled practical classes; attend all scheduled placements/simulations; achieve satisfactory/pass for portfolio tasks.
