Subject Description

    This subject will explore the full scope of practice for a pharmacist including new and expanded roles in various care settings. Students, in addition to acquiring knowledge in areas expanded practice will also apply their underpinning knowledge in both the pharmaceutical sciences and practice to fully appreciate selected areas of advanced and specialised practice. Students will complete their research and will prepare a written summary of their research findings in the form of a research paper suitable for publication in an appropriate academic journal, and include a reflection on their research Students will also deliver an oral presentation summarising their research, following which they will be required to respond to examiners' questions regarding their project design, findings and implications for practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss the full scope practice of the pharmacist in various practice settings
  • Demonstrate knowledge in the pharmaceutical sciences and practice and apply this knowledge to fully appreciate selected areas of advanced and specialised practice
  • Collate, summarise and interpret previously collected research data culminating in the construction of a scholarly manuscript, in preparation for dissemination as a research publication in a suitable academic journal
  • Design and prepare an oral presentation, communicating the aims, methodologies and outcomes of their research project in a manner that is engaging for a target audience and respond effectively to examiner questions and critique

  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (40%) - Group
  • Written > Case study analysis - (10%) - Individual
  • Written > Research report - (50%) - Group

Special Assessment Requirements

Compulsory residential attendance is required for successful completion of this subject. 6 week on-campus teaching block, (Residential Assessment Week and Semester break prior to Placement)

Assumed Knowledge:  As this is a core level 4 subject in the BPharm(Hons)/MPharm pathway, students will be expected to have completed all core level 1, 2 and 3 subjects
