Subject Description

    This subject continues to develop areas of professional pharmacy practice, pharmaceutics and counselling. In the pharmacy practice area, students will expand on their previous knowledge in management to include financial management relating to pharmacy practice. Pharmacy law and ethics will consider issues in contemporary practice, with a focus on workplace law, negligence, privacy, digital health and ethical dilemmas. Students will continue to develop skills in clinical dispensing and counselling and extemporaneous dispensing. In the area of pharmaceutics, students will explore novel drug delivery and biosimilar medications. Additionally, students will learn the theory and principles of immunisation and be trained in the delivery of vaccinations in the pharmacy setting. Students will continue development of their project management skills. They will analyse their project findings in order to extract conceptually robust conclusions and derive meaningful and practically relevant recommendations, including strategies for implementation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the basic dispensing functions of a pharmacist in the areas of clinical and extemporaneous dispensing and patient counselling
  • Discuss and demonstrate an understanding of aspects of contemporary pharmacy practice relating to management theory, business law and ethics
  • Discuss advanced applications in drug delivery including novel drug delivery systems
  • Explain the theoretical basis of immunisation and demonstrate competence in vaccine delivery
  • Create a professionally appropriate and critical examination of their group project findings and outcomes from which robust conclusions can be extracted and future recommendations provided

Assumed Knowledge:  As this is a core level 4 subject in the BPharm(Hons)/MPharm pathway, students will be expected to have completed all core level 1, 2 and 3 subjects
