PC1102 - Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutics 1

Subject Description

    This subject introduces students to ethical issues in professional practice and explores management practices relevant to community pharmacy. The scientific basis of solid and liquid dosage form design will be covered, including packaging, labelling, transportation and storage requirements of pharmaceuticals. The role of complementary medicines in pharmacy will also be introduced. Students will further develop skills in compounding including calculations and more advanced techniques in the production of pharmaceutical formulations. Students will also be introduced to basic principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and consider their application to pharmacy practice. Students will learn about quality control procedures in the pharmaceutical industry, including pharmacopoeial quality testing of solid dosage forms. Students will attend an observational placement in community pharmacy.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the role of complementary medicines in contemporary pharmacy practice
  • Explain the principles of pharmaceutics relating to pre-formulation, including bioavailability, packaging, labelling, transportation, storage and both large and small scale manufacture (sterile and non- sterile)
  • Explain the principles of basic pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and apply simple pharmacokinetic calculations
  • Discuss and evaluate ethical and management principles in pharmacy practice and identify these principles during experiential (observational) placement
  • Demonstrate competence in communication in compounding skills and knowledge
