OT2013 - Psycho-emotional Determinants of Occupation

Subject Description

In this subject students will examine a variety of psychosocial factors that can impact on individual's occupational participation and performance. Students will learn about different mental health diagnoses and critically analyse the occupational therapy role in assessment and intervention within contemporary mental health practice. Models of wellbeing will be explored and their relevance examined in relation to current and emerging occupational therapy practice domains.

Learning Outcomes

• critically analyse the impact of psychiatric diagnoses and associated symptoms upon occupational performance
• evaluate relevant occupational therapy assessment and intervention approaches and critically examine their applicability and usefulness in specific practice contexts
• explore and reflect upon the wide variety of psychosocial factors that compromise and/or promote occupational engagement and wellbeing
• gather and analyse psychosocial information and synthesise this within a relevant model in order to formulate recommendations to enhance wellbeing

• Oral > Presentation 1 - (30%) - Group
• Participation > Class participation - Individual
• Written > Case study analysis - (50%) - Individual
• Written > Educational resource - (20%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; achieve a combined minimum average of 50% across the two individual written assessments; participate in at least 80% of scheduled workshops.
