NS1771 - Introduction to the Professions

Subject Description

This subject introduces students to the evolution of nursing and midwifery as professional disciplines. Students will examine historical and contemporary professional, political and regulatory influences on this development. The role of the registered nurse and midwife within the healthcare team is also explored and students are encouraged to examine their own concept of being a healthcare professional. In this subject the concept of evidence based practice is introduced as a foundation for person-centred practice.

• outline the role of professional and statutory authorities in the regulation of the health professions
• discuss the concept of evidence based practice
• establish a professional portfolio to support personal and professional development
• describe the role of the registered nurse and midwife in the context of the healthcare team

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; participate in at least 80% of scheduled tutorial classes/specified online content; achieve a satisfactory grade for the portfolio assessment task; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties.
