NM2103 - Information Design

Subject Description

Students in this subject will be introduced to basic principles of information design and explore areas such as sense-making and human-centred design solutions. Students will learn how to visually interpret and communicate information in an engaging manner. Students will gain an understanding of methods for visualising complex data and designing usable information for people. Students will explore how complex ideas can be communicated with creativity, clarity and efficiency in relation to the needs of users. The output of an information design can include information content design, diagrams, print page design, illustrations, digital screen or interactive solutions. Information solutions may be created for a variety of media.

Learning Outcomes

• understand and apply a coherent body of theoretical and technical knowledge of information design concepts and their evolution
• demonstrate broad understanding of the methods of graphic and media design, including the creative processes involved in developing content as narratives and visual explanations
• appraise and critique the needs and behavioural responses of users to written and visual material depicted within digital media
• express creative ideas and communication solutions clearly and coherently through appropriate interpretation of data and information to inform the effective design of digital media products

Subject Assessment

• Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (30%) - Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Creative work - (40%) - Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Multimedia production - (30%) - Individual

Assumed Knowledge:  It is recommended that students have basic technological skills in a software such as Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop; or they need to be prepared to engage in self-directed learning using software tutorials to acquire these skills.
