This module has been developed specifically for allied health professionals in the following professions: Occupational Therapy, Psychology and Social Work.

Subject Description

Alcohol, and Other Drug (AOD), misuse is one of the most common issues in today's society. The cost to the community for the care of individual with this disease, not to mention the legal expense, is growing each and every year. It is at the primary health level of medical care that the health provider will see the presentation for AOD services before any tertiary care facility admits the individual for detoxification or rehabilitation. This module explores common substance types and the biological impact they have on the central nervous system, Trans Theoretical Model of Change and matching interventions to stages of change, comorbid mental, physical and neurological conditions and relapse prevention. Participants will conduct both screening and stages of change assessments for a rural and/or remote consumer living with AOD misuse for which they will then develop an intervention plan.

Learning Outcomes

• design and develop evidence-based, multi- disciplinary interventions to support consumers and their families who are experiencing alcohol and other drug issues in rural and/or remote contexts
