ML5308 - Advanced Haematology 2

Subject Description

This subject covers in detail the microscopic pathology skills required for a laboratory diagnosis of both malignant and non malignant leucocyte disorders. Skills in the laboratory diagnosis of malaria are also taught. This subject with ML5307 completes the professional requirement for a graduate medical laboratory scientist in haematology.

Learning Outcomes

• create descriptive criteria for the identification immature leukocytes
• describe the blood film features for a diverse range of malignant and non-malignant leukocyte disorders
• evaluate results of haematological analysis (including morphology, cell counts, molecular and flow cytometry) and link these to the pathophysiology and diagnosis of leukocyte disorders
• perform malaria blood film diagnosis / interpretation
• exercise judgment to interpret and comment on data collected during practical/clinical sessions and the interpretation of clinical case studies

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
• Written > Examination - In class - (50%) - Individual
