MH1061 - Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology

Subject Description

    This subject will provide an overview of body organisation and introduce important concepts and principles of anatomy and physiology as relevant for Sports and Exercise Science students. This includes an introduction to cells and tissues, the nervous system and the function and relationships of bone, muscle and joints. A detailed study of the gross anatomical structure and functional anatomy of the upper body will then be undertaken. An integrated understanding of the human body will be achieved with practical sessions, including the study of human cadaveric material, and functional case-studies will facilitate the integration of material and the correlation of structure to function.

Learning Outcomes

  • To gain a detailed understanding of the principles of the musculoskeletal system including a detailed study of the upper body and thorax
  • To gain a basic understanding of the structure and function of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems
  • To provide a basis for subsequent applied studies requiring a knowledge of human anatomy and physiology
  • To gain an understanding of overall body structure, organisation and function from the sub-cellular to the organ level

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%)
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (35%)
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (15%)
