ME3511 - Dynamics and Acoustics

Credit points:03
Year:2021
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Prerequisites:MA2000 and ME2521
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering

Subject Description

Theory of Vibration covers the following topics: lumped parameter (spring-mass-damper) systems free and forced vibration of single and multi-DOF systems. Continuous parameter (distributed) systems vibrations of strings, beams and plates. Acoustics wave propagation in fluids, sound pressure and sound power, noise measurement scales, sound fields and sources. Condition monitoring for predictive maintenance fault detection on some common machinery.

Learning Outcomes

  • produce a dynamic model of a machine/structure and demonstrate methods and techniques for noise and vibration control
  • effectively communicate in written and oral forms to a critical audience
  • discuss development and research directions within the field of vibration, acoustics, machine condition monitoring and diagnostics
  • demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental scientific principles of vibration, acoustics, and machine condition monitoring diagnostics
  • analyse and solve vibration and acoustics problems in engineering

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Tutorials 5%, two practical assessments worth 6% each, Literature Review essay 8%, Literature Review presentation 5% - (30%) - Individual
