Subject Description

    This subject examines the economic, cultural and social significance of media and communication industries in a contemporary, globalised media landscape. Subject material covered aid students' understanding of how meaning is negotiated in various communication contexts. Students learn basic journalism skills, examine different types of journalism and the different professional roles journalists occupy. There is an explanation of news, news sense and news values as students consider what makes news, what is not news, and why.

  • demonstrate an understanding of the role and importance of communication in society
  • critically appraise news values
  • independently plan, source and write an original news story of publishable standard
