IA5119 - Empowerment and Change

Credit points:03
Year:2021
Student Contribution Band:Band 4
Administered by:Division of Tropical Environments & Societies

Subject Description

Drawing on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Well Being Empowerment Program which has been established in communities for over ten years, this subject explores the concepts underlying social and emotional wellbeing and their relevance to the nature and process of human relationships. Specifically, it examines what is meant by the concepts "empowerment" and "change", and how the two interrelate. The subject therefore encourages students to re-think and re-theorise critical understandings of empowerment and develop appropriate strategies and interventions to assist Indigenous people to achieve their goals.

Learning Outcomes

  • critically explore the nature of crisis and conflict and the impact on human behaviour
  • deconstruct the concepts of social and emotional wellbeing and the relevance in the context of the social determinants of health and wellbeing
  • critically analyse the theoretical underpinnings of empowerment and change and the relationship between the two and present research outcomes in an appropriate academic format

Subject Assessment

  • Critical Review of the Family Wellbeing Program through an interactive delivery of the Program with participants - (60%) - Group & Individual
  • Written > Critical Analysis - (40%) - Individual
