Subject Description

This subject is designed as an opportunity for postgraduate students from different disciplines to work together to explore the contemporary Indigenous position and relationships with their current and future professional practice. The subject aims to build on students' appreciation of the implications of Indigenous knowledge continuities, ruptures and convergences in relation to their disciplines and future professional practice. Through supported participation in difficult dialogues, the subject will provide students with opportunities to link theory to practice through practical engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people or organisations or practical issues in professional contexts. Seminar, scenario and project-based approaches to learning will provide hypothetical and real opportunities for students to practice navigating the tensions and complexities at the interface of Indigenous and non-Indigenous understandings.

Learning Outcomes

  • apply their knowledge and skills through the demonstration of a productive disposition to effectively engage and navigate the tensions and complexities at the interface of Indigenous and Western knowledges and practices
  • critically analyse theoretical positions and contests in Indigenous Studies and its intersections with their disciplines, and apply these to working effectively with Indigenous communities
  • explore the philosophical and social contexts of different disciplines and how these impact Indigenous communities
