Subject Description

    This subject provides a basic knowledge of the cultural and organisational frameworks within which international business is conducted. It adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to introduce students to important issues and challenges in managing cultural diversity in the workplace. Conceptual and theoretical frameworks are used to develop an understanding of the ways in which cultures differ and how such differences impact on organizations.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical frameworks and conceptual tools for describing the development of communications systems
  • develop a good grasp on how communication processes differ among cultures, acquire and analyse knowledge and skills that increase intercultural competence
  • examine the unique relationship between history, culture and identity as it functions for diverse groups of people and to recognise 'communication' as an active production and negotiation of meanings, not just the transmission of information
  • create a critical perspective on local/global issues by developing an understanding on the meaning, importance and tensions of international communication, and by examining the historical and political dimensions of intercultural relations
  • demonstrate willingness to be self-reflective, flexible, and open communicators in intercultural communication interactions
  • identify barriersracism, sexism, and systems of privilegethat arise from histories of colonization, exploitation, and discrimination and learn ways to creatively address these inequities
