EE5300 - Non-Conventional Electronics

Credit points:03
Year:2021
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering

Subject Description

The emergence of non-silicon based electronics is transforming the conventional silicon based electronic technologies that will lead to light-weight, low powered devices such as flexible displays, and low-cost photovoltaic systems. This subject will give an overview of emerging technologies in the field of electronics and sensors, and will cover topics including materials design and synthesis, materials characterisation, and device applications. The main highlights of the subjects will be organic semiconducting materials, graphene and organic photovoltaic devices.

Learning Outcomes

  • explain the development of organic semiconductor
  • investigate the chemical structure and electronic property of organic semiconductors
  • assess synthetic methods to construct organic semiconducting materials and graphene
  • evaluate characterisation methods for organic semiconducting materials
  • describe the structure and operation of organic electronic devices especially organic photovoltaics
  • fabricate and characterise organic electronic devices

Subject Assessment

  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Technical Review - (35%) - Individual
  • Written > Technical report - (40%) - Individual
  • Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration - (15%) - Individual
