Subject Description

    The purpose of this subject is to implement small-scale research project related to the discipline of Education and produce a 10,000 - 12,000 word dissertation under the guidance of one or more research advisors. The word count for the dissertation excludes references and reporting of qualitative data. The dissertation shall address appropriate literature; provide a rationale for the chosen methodology; describe methods for data collection and analysis; present data in an appropriate format; include an analysis and discussion of these data; and draw conclusions and implications from the research such as appropriate implications for theory, practice and further research. The dissertation will be examined by two, independent academic examiners. Successful completion of this subject may lead to higher degree by research study.

Learning Outcomes

  • critically evaluate and apply a body of knowledge relevant to a small-scale research topic in Education
  • design a small scale research study and conduct that study in an ethical manner in line with University policy and procedures
  • systematically analyse a unique data set in relation to a chosen method and methodology
  • interpret, and transmit findings to a specialist audience
  • critically locate their small-scale study within a wider educational context
