Subject Description

    The primary goal of this subject is to foster pre-service teacher development towards the Graduate Australian Professional Standards for Teachers requirements in the context of design and technologies and digital technologies, the two distinct but related subjects of the Australian Curriculum: Technologies. Upon completion of this subject, graduate student teachers will be able to approach the teaching of technologies positively, including game design, coding and robotics, with an accurate and thorough understanding of learning experiences that critically respond to community-based priorities. Through a focus on pedagogical practices that support learning, including differentiated practice for diverse learners, students will develop and demonstrate a thorough understanding of the content and processes of technologies education including 'thinking in technologies' (design, systems and computational thinking), game-based learning, project management and how the ICT General capability in the Australian Curriculum is used to support technologies learning. Students will explore their role in influencing learning through planning, focusing on how their teaching must be responsive to individual student's needs as they plan learning experiences that provide primary and secondary students with authentic opportunities to create solutions, consider sustainable patterns of living and contribute to preferred futures for themselves and others.

Learning Outcomes

  • design, implement and evaluate curriculum, assessment and differentiated learning opportunities through the development of a unit with a sequence of 3-5 lessons, with a view to enhance learning outcomes for all students, including those from diverse cultural, linguistic and socio-economic backgrounds and with specific learning needs through the use of design thinking strategies
  • plan learning experiences that provide primary and secondary students with authentic opportunities to creating solutions, consider sustainable patterns of living and contribute to preferred futures for themselves and others
  • analyse critically, reflect on and synthesise complex information, data, problems, concepts, theories and recent developments in the fields of teaching and learning in professional practice and research contexts as associated the Australian Curriculum: Technologies learning area
  • critically reflect on their role in influencing learning through planning, focusing on how their teaching is responsive to individual students needs
  • demonstrate a thorough knowledge and understanding of Key Ideas in the Australian Curriculum: Technologies learning area and the two distinct but related subjects: Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies
