Subject Description

    This subject comprises a series of lectures and tutorials on fundamental orthodontic theory and clinical training. Included in this subject are in-depth case presentations where students show the progress of their cases in group seminars. The topics in this subject include clinical trials and systematic reviews on clinical treatment modalities and their effects. This subject exposes students to contemporary developments of orthodontic treatment approached and the supporting research, to understand the important philosophy of evidence-based orthodontics. Students are required to read and critically review the designated reading and present their views in the tutorials. The ability to critically evaluate journal articles is seen as an indispensable tool in the pursuit of clinical practice founded on Evidence-Based Dentistry.

Learning Outcomes

  • critically evaluate clinical information from in-treatment case presentations and optimize the selection of appropriate tooth movement mechanics in order to meet the treatment objectives
  • apply a thorough understanding of the broad range of orthodontic problems and management options of complex orthodontic cases
  • discuss the orthodontic/orthopedic management of Class II and Class III skeletal discrepancies
  • critically analyse orthodontic literature and apply it clinically
