Subject Description

    This subject is the second of two subjects (the other being CH4511) that in combination constitute the full-year Chemical Sciences Honours degree. The Honours in Chemical Sciences program is intended for students whose undergraduate major is not necessarily in Chemistry, but who have a major in another science (or related) discipline and want to carry out a project where chemical techniques can be applied to that area. Total effort required to complete this subject is expected to be 520 hours, including supervisory meetings, experimental work, research, writing, and other work.

Learning Outcomes

  • carry out a substantial piece of research and write a dissertation
  • formulate and solve research problems
  • understand theoretical concepts in a broad range of topics which give background to the research project

Subject Assessment

As this subject is part of a subject chain, a final standard grade (e.g. P, C) will only be recorded for each subject after successful completion of all parts of the subject chain.

  • 10% for each of three completed subjects selected with supervisor's approval - (30%) - Individual
  • 45%: Thesis. 20%: Supervisor marks on productivity and intellectual ownership. 5%: Oral Presentation - (70%) - Individual

Assumed Knowledge:  Available to graduates who have achieved a credit average in relevant third year subjects in an undergraduate degree at this University and have shown an ability to apply chemical ideas to their discipline. Graduates from other universities with equivalent qualifications will be considered for acceptance. Except with the approval of the Dean of College/Associate Dean, all subjects in a chain must be studied in consecutive teaching periods.
