Credit points:03
Year:2021
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering

This subject is only available within the Certificate of Higher Education or as Non Award Study. Study Period 3 offering commences 11/01/2021.

Subject Description

This subject is a bridging chemistry subject designed to be equivalent of Queensland Senior high school chemistry (and its equivalents in other Australian states). Completion of this subject satisfies the chemistry entry requirements for many JCU degree programs. Content includes chemistry as a science discipline; matter and atoms; elements and the Periodic Table; chemical bonding; molecular shapes and polarity; introduction to organic compounds and structure; moles; reaction stoichiometry; limiting reagents; concentrations; intermolecular interactions; gases; phase transitions and heat capacity; reaction kinetics; enthalpy and entropy; fuels and energy; chemical equilibrium; acids and bases; redox reactions; introduction to chemical synthesis, analytical and separation techniques.

Learning Outcomes

  • explain that chemistry is a broad discipline that underpins, and is influenced by, other scientific fields
  • explain basic chemical principles and the testable and contestable nature of these principles
  • use fundamental chemical terminology and the periodic table to solve chemical problems
  • solve qualitative and quantitative problems in the chemical sciences
  • interpret data in both qualitative and quantitative terms and to use these as evidence toward a scientifically defensible argument

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (55%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (45%) - Individual
