Subject Description

    The ecology, systematics, structure and function of terrestrial arthropods including the insects, arachnids and myriapods.Topics include evolution and systematics of terrestrial arthropods; structure and function of insect systems; biological control and integrated pest management; collecting, curating and identifying terrestrial arthropods.

Learning Outcomes

  • to appreciate the diversity of terrestrial arthropods
  • to correctly identify and curate terrestrial arthropods
  • to know the variety of techniques used to collect terrestrial arthropods
  • to understand the evolutionary relationships between the major groups of terrestrial arthropods
  • to understand the theory behind biological control and integrated pest management

Assumed Knowledge:  Students enrolling in this subject should have a good understanding of organismal biology and taxonomy (BZ1006-CNS/BS1007-TSV or equivalent), and skills in data analysis and experimental design (SC2202 or SC2209 or equivalent).
