Subject Description

    This subject is designed to build the toolkit of a modern zoologist and ecologist. Methods and skills will span the spectrum from fundamental (field and survey skills and basic taxonomy and identification of key vertebrates, invertebrates and plants) to innovative techniques, including remote sensing technologies involving satellite imagery, drones, sensors, camera traps and environmental forensics.

Learning Outcomes

  • ability to identify species of particular importance to the tropics (e.g. dominant, endangered or invasive)
  • ability to critically think about, identify and assess techniques used in research
  • ability to efficiently survey and detect key species
  • an understanding of the capacity for new hi-tech approaches to improve the skills of zoologists and ecologists

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Field report - (60%) - Individual
  • Written > Lab/Practical report - (40%) - Individual
