Subject Description

    This subject introduces basic concepts of microbiology and the diversity of microorganisms to be fund in the natural environment. It then introduces the immune system and inflammation and how the body interacts with the microorganisms around it. Issues of immune deficiency are also addressed. It then introduces healthcare related microbiology and some of the major the pathogens which invade the body to cause disease and illness. Finally it introduces the discipline of pharmacology and applies the principles of this discipline to management of pain and inflammation.

Learning Outcomes

  • define the major groups of microorganisms and list their defining features
  • compare modes of transmission of microorganisms and identify treatment and prevention strategies
  • explain introductory principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and illustrate these concepts with exemplar drugs
  • describe the components of the immune system and explain their roles in resistance to disease

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Test/Quiz 2 - (30%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Obtain an overall cumulative mark of 50%. Attend 80% of practical classes (internal offerings) or attend residential week (mixed mode) to pass the subject. Must achieve a mark of at least 50% on the final exam
