Subject Description

    This subject covers a broad range of state-of-the art laboratory techniques used in biochemistry and molecular biology research laboratories through both lectures and laboratory experience. Lectures will cover the use of modern techniques used in biochemistry and molecular biology and experimental design. Students will be required to complete a 20 hours of lab work or tutorials to expose them to modern research relevant molecular and proteins techniques.

Learning Outcomes

  • review scientific publications in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology and communicate this is oral and written formats
  • develop laboratory skills and critical thinking in the manipulation and analysis of cells and cellular biomolecules in a research practical or tutorial
  • source, synthesise and evaluate reliable scientific information with independence
  • integrate knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology of diverse cellular processes into knowledge of basic cellular functions that drive life in mammals, bacteria, and invertebrates

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (30%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (10%) - Individual
  • Written > Lab/Practical report - (60%) - Individual
