WS2121 - Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Practice

Subject Description

The aim of this subject is to prepare Indigenous and non-Indigenous students to work respectfully alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by providing students with culturally appropriate skills and theoretical frameworks. Students will be encouraged to develop a critical awareness of the unique, complex, historical and contemporary relationships between social work and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples including social structures, systems, inequities and injustices, and how to apply professional knowledge and skills to address injustices.

Learning Outcomes

• draw on key texts related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander historical and contemporary experiences to demonstrate understanding of how own history influences identity and relationships
• demonstrate a critical appreciation of historical and contemporary relationships between social work and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
• distinguish the differences between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and peoples
• examine and integrate subject learning and critical awareness of self in professional practice with and alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities

Subject Assessment

• autobiographical journal - (50%)
• Reflective practice statement - (50%)

Assumed Knowledge:  WS1006 have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level
