TV5020 - Animal Production

Available to graduate students with a degree in Agricultural Science (or equivalent). Other appropriately trained graduates may enrol at the discretion of the Academic Head of Veterinary Science.

Subject Description

A review of the essential features of ruminant animal production including nutrition, pasture production and utilisation, reproductive physiology and animal breeding of food and fibre producing domestic animals.

Learning Outcomes

• define key concepts and challenges in animal production systems
• review the nature of the animal industries of northern Australia and the constraints to productivity
• discuss contemporary issues in animal production
• investigate and analyse concepts in animal nutrition (including pasture science) and the application of such concepts in practical animal feeding situations with emphasis on the tropical environment
• develop practical skills in common animal husbandry
• describe factors that can affect the reproductive performance of livestock in the tropical rangeland environments
