TM5526 - Public Health Economics

Subject Description

This subject provides students with an introduction to looking at health care systems through an economic lens. The course is designed to be practical and will give students the necessary tools to design and implement an economic evaluation. The course will cover the role of economics in the health system, how economics influences the funding of the health system, how the health system influences the wider economy, cost of illness studies, measurement of health outcomes, measurement of costs, and measuring indirect costs and benefits.

Learning Outcomes

• measure the impact of health beyond the healthcare system, including on other government departments, and on individual living standards
• choose an appropriate type of economic evaluation and assess the best sources of information to measure costs and benefits
• evaluate and appraise economic research papers, choose existing sources of data that could be used to populate new economic models

Subject Assessment
