SS5103 - Research Methods for the Social Sciences

Subject Description

This is a core subject for students enrolled in the Master of Social Science and Master of Social Work degree. This subject is aimed at assisting postgraduate students to gain an understanding of an advanced, integrated body of knowledge regarding research in the Social Sciences, including ethics, theories, research principles and methods. Students will have the opportunity to investigate topics, worldviews, methodologies, methods and processes for social science research and demonstrate their proficiency in designing, planning and executing a substantial social science research project. The subject will focus on qualitative methods, with content on quantitative methodologies, mixed method design and discipline specific research designs.

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate and apply an advanced integrated body of knowledge for research in the social sciences including ethics, theories, literature, methodologies and methods
• appraise and critique highly relevant, topic-related literature to create a comprehensive literature review
• summarise, present and defend use of specific methodologies and methods
• design, plan and execute a well-written, substantial research proposal
• integrate understanding of issues encountered when researching minority/disadvantaged groups or sensitive topics
• apply a high level of responsibility and accountability for own learning and professional development
• demonstrate knowledge of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methodologies
