Subject Description

    The first part of this subject is designed as an introduction to issues involved in child and adolescent mental health. These issues are situated in an historical, international and national context. This is followed by an overview of theoretical and practical approaches integral to the understanding of prenatal development and birth, and physical, cognitive, social and personality development in infancy, toddlerhood and preschool years.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate an understanding of some of the issues involved in cultural diversity
  • demonstrate an understanding of the issues involved in labelling and classification of mental health problems
  • demonstrate knowledge of the history and current perspectives of developmental psychology
  • demonstrate knowledge of the developmental pathways involved in: prenatal development and birth; social and personality development in infancy and toddlerhood; cognitive, social and personality development in infancy and toddlerhood; physical, cognitive, social and personality development in in preschool years
